A huge "Thank You" to all those who’s efforts enabled the inaugural matches to take place at Woodlands Lane on Saturday; despite the “biblical” amount of rain that hit Woodlands Lane on Tuesday 15th .
With the help of managers and coaches 50+ of the youth membership were the first to enjoy the use of the new ground.
Ironically it was the huge volume of water that fell over 24 hours that threatened the use of the ground; this after the development of the outfield had been hampered by lack of water earlier in the spring growing season. Recent dry spell having been combated by the use of the new pumped irrigation system.
With the first ball being a no-ball due to too many fielders on the leg side “The Prez” then managed to play the next few deliveries despite the presence of a threatening 20 man slip cordon.
The parents and supporters were then treated to two simultaneous Valley End Vs Valley end matches, one on each square, under glorious late September sunshine.
As spectators wandered around the new ground many braved the thistles and headed to the south facing slopes of the main bund to enjoy an elevated viewing position of one, or both, games.
Following the matches neither square showed signs of wear and tear and can look forward to preening and club maintenance to set them both up for a full season’s use next year.
So don’t be shy there is plenty of work to be done to make sure we are ready for a flying start next year. Tasks range from finishing the seeding to the edges of the ground, preparing & seeding the overflow car park, filling “scrapings” and pot holes in the ground to painting the equipment sheds and doors/fascias to the Sub-Station.
A few hours on 3rd or 4th October will make things better and easier next year!
